Within 100km of Château
de Clérac there are so many places
to visit - depending on your motivation
(e.g. wine/cognac, historical, leisure,
etc). Amongst some of the most popular
ones you have...
| Cognac |
| Cognac has been
the main source of wealth for
the Poitou-Charentes region for
more than 400 years. The "liquor
of the gods as Victor Hugo called
it, owes its outstanding character
to the warm, humid climate and
the soil in this region.
The Cognac vineyards are in Charente
and Charente-Maritime. Six grape-growing
areas or Crus (Grande Champagne,
Petite Champagne, les Borderies,
les Fins Bois, les Bons Bois and
les Bois Ordinaires) produce white
wines suitable for double distillation
in a typical Charente still.
Tours with tastings are available
in most of the large Cognac houses
(e.g. Remy Martin). However, smaller
individual tours can be arranged
where you visit some of the smaller
distilleries and meet the people
who make the Cognac. Please speak
to us if you are interested in
this. |

| Tour
of the Grands Crus Classés |
| The region to
the south of Clérac produces
some of the most famous and aristocratic
wines in the world. Margaux, St.
Julien, Pauillac and St. Estèphe
to the North-West of Bordeaux;
Pomerol and St. Emilion around
Libourne, while Blaye and Côtes
de Blaye are but a 15 min drive
away.
Most of the Grands Crus are to
be found NW of Bordeaux along
the D2, sometimes known as the
mythical wine trail! Be aware
though that the more famous vineyards
will usually require advance bookings
for tastings. However, there are
literally hundreds of other producers
more than willing to open their
cellars for a tasting. |

| Dune
of Pyla |
|
|
 |
| |
The
dune of Pyla is an amazing natural
wonder - it's the largest sand-dune
in Europe, stretching several
kilometers. From the top you have
fantastic views of the ocean and
the forests of the Landes region. |
| La
Rochelle |
| La Rochelle is
the capital of the Charente-Maritime
department in France. The best
way of seeing La Rochelle is to
stroll along the quay sides of
the Old Harbour or through the
network of pedestrian streets.
La Rochelle has many lovely restaurants,
museums and is full of historical
old buildings. There's also a
famous aquarium near the Old Harbour.
Check with the Tourist Office
upon your arrival for full details
on what the city has to offer.
La Rochelle is roughly 90mins
from Château de Clérac. |

Arcachon
Arcachon is a pretty
and lively seaside town on the
Atlantic coast, close to the dune
of Pyla and only a 30min drive
from Bordeaux. It has great beaches
and a lively nite-life! However,
beware of traveling to and from
Arcachon on a Sunday or public
holiday - unless you like traffic
jams! |
