St
Emilion |
| Saint-Emilion
is located 35kn Northeast of Bordeaux,
between Libourne and Castillon-La-Bataille.
This medieval town stands proudly
at the top of a hill overlooking
the Dordogne valley, and was built
in the shape of an amphitheatre.
Saint-Emilion is an incredible
open air museum. The most surprising
remains with no doubt its underground
monuments - a monolithic church
dug out of solid limestone, as
well as underground galleries
covering more than 70 hectares.
You'll also discover Romanesque
churches and ruins that stretch
along its steep and narrow streets. |

Saint-Emilion is of course a
wine of great tradition, already
well known during the Gallo-Roman
period. It is a complex appelation
with a great diversity of soils
which adds to its mystery and
prestige. Vines grow all round
the town; they are inseparable
from the landscape and seem to
have sculpted it, providing infinite
variety and personality. Wine
tours and wine-tasting are available
throughout the year. Please check
with the Saint-Emilion
Tourist Office for more details. |
Jonzac
& its pool complex - "Antilles
de Jonzac" |
| Once a Huegenot
town, Jonzac is built on a spur
of rock encircled by the river
Seugne and is now a spa town.
The 15th century castle and its
battlements is well worth a visit.
Also of interest, the Carmelite
convent - now an archaeological
museum.
The Antilles de Jonzac is a pool
complex - beside the Casino -
with wave pools, jacuzzi, swimming
pool, pool with countercurrents
and a sandy indoor beach! The
complex also has a gym with fitness
and water games. |

Libourne
Libourne holds
a great open-air market of fresh-produce
every morning (except Mondays).
This market has all the flavour
of those usually found in Provence
region of France.
Libourne is also surrounded by
some very fine vineyards - Pomerol
and Fronsac to name but two. |

| Zoo
de la Palmyre - near Royan
This 14-hectare zoo - one of
the largest in France - contains
animals from all over the world.
It is special in that many of
the enclosures let you get "up
close & personal" with
the animals - like feeding giraffes
or zebras from the palm of your
hand or stroking a rhino's back!
There's also scheduled performances
by sea lions and parrots.
Open daily. Snacks available
on-site.
