If you are looking to rent a luxury gite in France for up to 15 people then you've probably thought of a villa, with its own pool. But would you have thought you could hire a castle in France for the same price? Château de Clérac, just a 30 minute drive from Bordeaux, and set in the beautiful Haute-Saintonge countryside of the Charente-Maritime is both a cost-effective alternative to a luxury villa and a unique opportunity to be king of your own castle! The chateau, in the village of Clérac, lies at the centre of its 22 acres of walled gardens, forests and outbuildings. The château has a pool - an outdoor 11x5m salt-water pool which is but 50m from the gardens at the rear of the chateau. Inside the chateau you'll find plenty of space. On the ground floor there's a huge salon, fully equipped kitchen, dining room, library, gallery and lounge. The bedrooms and their en-suites are on the 1st floor of the château, together with the upstairs gallery, linnen room and hall. The approxmate floor area of Chateau de Clérac is 750 metres squared (about 8000sq feet). We usually operate a self catering chateau rental, by the week , weekend or other period. However, we can organize catering on occassion. We also offer Bed and Breakfast at the chateau out of peak season. Château de Clérac is on the outskirts of the village of Clérac (3 mins by foot!), in the Charente-Maritime department of France. Clérac is a small, pretty rural village with some 400 inhabitants. Within a few kilometers of Clérac is the town of Montguyon...

Montguyon

Montguyon (literally Guy's Mount) was originally a fortified castle town - guided visits are given round the medieval castle during summer. Being a larger town, you can find banks (cash machines, cashing travellers cheques, etc), chemists, various shops and a supermarket. Montguyon is also a market town, and on the first Wednesday of each month the streets are lined with stalls selling some fantastic fresh local produce.

On the way to the Beauvallon lake (see below) you can also see an ancient monolith, dating back thousands of years.

This is a private swimming lake (free entrance) with restaurant, on the outskirts of Montguyon. The water is clean and warm and there's a special play area for kids.

Wine, Pineau & Cognac at Château la Magdelaine

Just a few kilometers away in St. Martin d'Ary you will find the lovingly restored Chateau of Magdelaine. The chateau is privately owned, but feel free to drop by to taste their Pineaus, wine and Cognac.

Also in St. Martin d'Ary - just 1km away from Chateau la Magdelaine - you will find Chateau le Taillan. As well as providing rural gite accommodation (dormatory-style), they offer horse-riding for all levels.
